What exactly gets cleaned
AI assistants answer in Markdown, a lightweight formatting language that chat interfaces render nicely and almost everything else doesn't. Paste it into LinkedIn, a Word document or a web form and you get **double asterisks**, ### headings and [link text](url) brackets sitting in the middle of your text.
- Markdown symbols: bold, italic, strikethrough, headings, blockquotes, code fences, inline code and horizontal rules are removed; links become "text (url)". Identifiers like
my_variableand maths like2 * 3are left alone. - Invisible Unicode: zero-width spaces (U+200B), zero-width joiners, word joiners, byte-order marks, soft hyphens and bidirectional override characters (U+202A–U+202E, U+2066–U+2069). The last group is the same class of characters behind "Trojan Source" attacks on code review, so it's worth scrubbing before pasting text into code or configs.
- Odd spaces: non-breaking and narrow spaces become normal spaces, so word counts and search behave.
- Em dashes: converted to commas or hyphens (your choice); number ranges like 2020–2024 become 2020-2024.
- Bullets: Markdown
*and-lists become • dots that render everywhere, or plain hyphens. - Smart quotes and ellipses become plain ASCII when the destination prefers it.
What it doesn't do
It doesn't rewrite sentences, change tone or try to fool AI detectors. If a text reads like a press release, it will still read like one after cleaning. This is a formatting tool, not a ghostwriter.
FAQ
Why does AI text show asterisks when I paste it?
Chat assistants write in Markdown, where **double asterisks** mean bold and # means a heading. LinkedIn, most email clients and many forms don't render Markdown, so the raw symbols show up. The cleaner removes them and keeps the words.
What are invisible characters like U+200B?
Zero-width spaces, joiners, soft hyphens, byte-order marks and bidirectional control characters take up no visible space but can break search, word counts, code and form validation. The cleaner removes them and shows how many it found.
Will this make AI text undetectable?
No, and it doesn't try to. It only fixes formatting artifacts; it does not rewrite your wording. Detectors that analyse writing style will see the same text.
Which preset should I use for Notion?
Notion converts Markdown into real headings and lists when you paste, so the Notion preset keeps the structure and only removes invisible characters and odd spaces.
Is my text uploaded?
No. All cleaning happens with regular expressions inside your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.
